I FEAR NOTHING

BECAUSE I HAVE NOTHING

‘I Fear Nothing’ is a collection of photographs of posters from the demonstration held on October 15 2011, which led to the occupation of the Parliament staircase in Lisbon. On October 15, the Spanish indignados movement called for a day of global protest. The movement had got its second wind in September, with the “Occupy Wall Street” mass demonstrations in New York. In Lisbon, the protest named “October 15, Democracy goes out!” began with a march across the city. But at 6.30 pm, the protesters invaded the staircase of the Parliament and used it as an amphitheatre to organize a general assembly, the speakers mounted atop a truck addressing the protesters and citizens sitting on the staircase, with the Parliament as their setting. A few hours later, as only a few protesters were still camping in front of the stairs meanwhile recaptured by the police, the empty streets were full of posters that had been held during the demonstration. This contradictory atmosphere, both of rebel (the signs of a speech) and of desolation and abandonment (the deserted streets) – striking objects reduced to the status of still lifes – is what led us to publish these photographs.

A journey through George W. Bush’s home country: Peter Granser photographs billboards featuring the slogans of conservative America.

The arrow indicates the direction—it unmistakably points to the right: in the middle of a prairie-like, outdoor setting on a billboard with large letters that spell out “Signs.” It is an image within an image of symbolic content, for Peter Granser has given his latest series of works, which were done in Texas in 2006–07, the title Signs. After Sun City and Coney Island, Signs tracks down points of reference that can be grasped visually as a means to reveal America’s current state of mind. On his quest for suitable signs and symbols, the photographer traveled more than nineteen thousand kilometers throughout Texas, working from a stance of distant observation and skepticism as he captured images of emptiness and stagnation in George W. Bush’s home country.

There are not many photo series about Alzheimer’s. The reason seems obvious. This is a disease that is first and foremost about language. That’s what makes it so frightening: Alzheimer’s attacks its victim’s cognitive and intellectual faculties, starting with the ability to communicate.

Granser’s portraits nonetheless manifest a breathtaking immediacy. It is almost impossible to escape the fascination of these faces, to resist getting caught up in contemplating the life stories they represent.

There are few portrait series by contemporary photographers in which the protagonists are granted so much dignity and so much authority. It is true that, at the moment the shutter closes, Granser knows much more about what is going on than his subjects. He does control a situation that they do not comprehend. But what is the alternative? When journalists and literary figures write about Alzheimer’s patients, they are operating on the basis of a much more blatant incongruity. The author exercises the full range of his language skills to express himself, to make his points – whereas the patient by contrast seems to be an inferior being, because he has veered away from the world of language.

Granser does not promise us a comprehensive panorama. His series does not claim to constitute a scientific study. Cautiously, soberly and optimistically, the pictures embark on a dialogue, directing our gaze toward faces and gestures that no one would have otherwise taken the time to observe. Overstatement is not Granser’s métier. Once again: this is only one story about the traces that Alzheimer’s leaves behind. It’s about loss. It’s about dignity. And about the radiant contradictions in the human face.

Once upon a time, in the first decades of the twentieth century, Coney Island was a democratic paradise where rich and poor alike doffed their clothes and immersed themselves in continuous pleasures of the flesh, the eyes, and the city-dweller’s lust for thrills.

By the time Peter Granser came to check out the place it had reached a peculiar juncture. Efforts were already under way to renew the island. Granser trained his camera on a Coney Island in transition.

Granser allows his subjects a modicum of dignity, though they may seem silly, undeservedly pretentious, sad, even outrageous to a casual observer. His photographs take people on their own terms-and on our own terms, we humans prefer to think we are worth presenting to the world. Standing at a middle distance, both physically and emotionally, he maintains a lingering degree of the kind of neutrality that Walker Evans thought he could accomplish by refusing to treat his subjects like objects. Granser is wholly aware that the pride and imagination of certain people are as tacky and incongruous as the perplexing culture they maneuver in, but his comments, sometimes made by way of wry pairs of pictures, are delivered with calm irony, like a remark made by someone with a subtle sense of humor who changes neither his tone nor his facial expression

Peter Granser´s project “Sun City” is a series about a retirement colony in the American southwest, where you are only allowed to live, if you are over 55 years of age. In this strange city of spunky senior citizens, he encountered countless whimsical details. He took wrinkles, cacti, hair dryer hoods and plastic flamingos and compiled them into a basically true and only slightly exaggerated story about the future of aging. In “Sun City” being a senior doesn’t mean sitting in a rocking chair on the porch, looking back at the past, gradually taking one’s leave of life. Quite the opposite: Granser’s picture story is peopled by men and women who without any compromises or sentimentality have radically reinvented themselves in their latter years. Granser approaches this strange world with a sense of wonder and not with cynicism.
As if on a tight rope, she walks along the edges of a stone pool, one step at a time. Close by, the same figure appears, creating a hand shadow on the wall of a rough concrete building, or contemplating its reflection in the calm waters of a lake… Staging these moments, Loan Nguyen takes on the part of an actress in scenarios where likely reconciliations between nature and culture are played. However, as we move from one scene to the next, we do not uncover any narrative ; of her, nothing is said. She shows no intention of drawing up a self-portrait, only that of giving herself the means to accomplish a heartfelt interpretation of the landscapes. Text: Gabriele Schor

Places, in short, that define our lives and that of so many other people in the urbanized world.
Danckaert’s work thus becomes a landmark of intercultural understanding, something that manages not to be trapped in the easy imageries of the exotic-typical, but brings us back to where things begin and end: in real human life. In an age of globalization, such levels of understanding are real, valuable forms of knowledge.

On one hand, there is the theme of her personal journey from the United States to Europe – Lund returned to Denmark in 2003 after living in the US for 18 years. On the other hand, there are evocations of the timeframe in which the move occurred: 9/11, the war in Iraq, the Madrid bombings. The forces of globalization and alienation echo, in a subtle manner, throughout the work. Both themes, the personal and the global, combine and complement each other to create an atmosphere and expressiveness that go well beyond pure description.

There are documentary and diaristic elements in Lund’s photographic method, but her pieces are not simply pages from her private photo album; there is a transmission of a collective consciousness and emotion in her work. Some images, strikingly poetic and aesthetic, are very specific: Ground Zero, the Pentagon Exit, the ports of New York and Copenhagen. Others focus more on complex metaphors. The literal and the metaphorical intertwine: no image is either simply descriptive or simply metaphorical.

This series of photographs can be compared to a collection of poems. Birgitta Lund’s conceptual work comes out of the vision of an artist who uses photography to reflect a world in which we seem to be permanently in transit, a world where images flash onto our retinas for a few fleeting seconds before being replaced immediately by others.

The classics range from Alexis de Tocqueville’s studies of ‘Democracy in America’, to Robert Frank’s photo book ‘The Americans’, to Wim Wenders’ ‘paris texas’. In a country, which so consistently works on a homogeneous cultural identity, the view point of outsiders is so focused because they discover so much in the every-day life that is very basic. The German photographer Peter Granser also has been traveling across the US for years. In his two stunning photo books “Sun City” and “Coney Island”, with his melancholic view point he reduced the colourful side of the US to sun bleached ruins of the American dream. With his new book “Signs” he now presents an essay about the conservative America, which in its minimalistic directness deeply penetrates the mood of the country that is at a historic turn-around point. The photos were taken in Texas, that is in the very state, which George W. declares to be his home and in which strict piety and defiant combativeness combine to a unique attitude that is so alien tous Europeans. Granser avoids becoming polemic. His photos are guided by the sometimes subtle, sometimes confrontational signs left by this society in the empty Texan landscape; they are guided by the clear view of the outsider who knows a lot, but claims nothing.”

……… Coney Island´s American dream of technologically engineered leisure and spectacle looks slightly forlorn through Peter Granser´s lens, which registers a mix of sweet smiles and emptiness, dry humor and melancholy that he refers to as its “wonderful morbid charm.”

If you know anything about the history of Coney Island (and the history of the eternally optimistic American dream), these photographs quietly comment on social change and on the character of today, which yesterday inevitably turns into.

Foreword by Martin Hellmold, text by Vicki Goldberg
Hardcover
23 x 23 cm
96 pages
39 color photographs
German/English

There are not many photo series about Alzheimer’s. The reason seems obvious. This is a disease that is first and foremost about language. That’s what makes it so frightening: Alzheimer’s attacks its victim’s cognitive and intellectual faculties, starting with the ability to communicate…….

Granser’s portraits nonetheless manifest a breathtaking immediacy. It is almost impossible to escape the fascination of these faces, to resist getting caught up in contemplating the life stories they represent…..

The author exercises the full range of his language skills to express himself, to make his points – whereas the patient by contrast seems to be an inferior being, because he has veered away from the world of language…..

Peter Granser´s project “Sun City”, is a series about a retirement colony in the American southwest. In this strange, artificial city of spunky senior citizens, where you are only allowed to live, when you are over 55 years of age, he took wrinkles, cacti, hair dryer hoods and plastic flamingos and compiled them into a basically true and only slightly exaggerated story about the future of aging.
© Christoph Ribbat
